Sophomore Amber Powell placed third in the 197-pound weight class at the FHSAA State Wrestling Championships at Dr. Phillips Feb. 15.

In her first match, Powell, a first-year wrestler, lost to Emily Mills of Terry Parker High School by fall in 47 seconds and found herself in the consolation bracket. However, her day was far from over. In the consolation bracket, Powell reeled off four straight match wins to take third place.

In the first consolation match, Powell won by decision (6-2) against Poinciana’s Miranda Cruz. She followed it with another decision (9-6) against Orlando University’s Alejandra Vanegas. Powell won 17-7 against Anciote’s Cendessa Krus and then defeated Orlando University’s Kayani Delerme by fall (1:44) in the third-place match.
