The No Excuses Mentoring Program continues to leave a mark on the community and on the individuals participating in the program. Recently, NEMP students visited the Guardian Care Nursing Home for a Valentine’s Day event. The students also went on a college tour that included the University of Florida, Florida State University and Florida A&M University.

Created by assistant principal Orlando Norwood, NEMP debuted last year. Members meet every Monday and Wednesday. Today, 35 students, ranging from freshmen to seniors, are participating in the program.

Norwood said the young men were encouraged to join the program because they had something that stood out about them. Some needed help with academic or behavioral issues.

The idea, said Norwood, is “to develop in students the skills he acquired after high school and to pass them down.”
