Pioneer Girls Improve to 4-0 in District

The girls varsity basketball team defeated Dr. Phillips 41-37 during a home game Tuesday.

The game ended with senior guard Taylor Duffy connecting for a buzzer-beating three-pointer. Her shot capped a fierce comeback that saw Caleigh-Rose West tie the score on a pair of baskets. 

The win improved the Pioneers to 5-2, including 3-0 in the Class 8A, District 5.

“It feels pretty good winning this season. I’m training every day,” West said.

West said the team has room for improvement. 

“We still have struggles. Every team has their downfall, but, as a team, we all built up for this season,” West said.

The Panthers took an 11-point lead in the first period. The Pioneers fought back but still trailed 28-25 heading into the fourth period.

Oak Ridge 70, Freedom 35

Oak Ridge defeated Freedom 70-35 on Thursday to improve to 6-2 overall and 4-0 in the district. The team appears on its way to being the top seed in the District 5 tournament.

Anijah Grant led the team with 18 points and 11 rebounds. Rose scored 10 points. Imani Lubin had seven points, seven assists and three steals.

Oak Ridge 53, Potter’s House 52

The Pioneers defeated Potter’s House 53-52 in the City of Orlando Basketball Holiday Shootout Saturday. Jasmine Quarterman scored 11 points. Grant had nine, and Marri Jackson added eight.
