Orange County Public Schools will be closed Friday and Monday due to the expected impact of Hurricane Irma. A decision about whether the closure will be extended beyond Monday has not been made.

OCPS released a statement Thursday saying that weather updates and possible damage to schools will play a role in deciding whether additional cancellations will take place. OCPS plans to open some schools as shelters as early as Saturday.

On Wednesday and again on Thursday afternoon, OCPS released a statement saying schools would be open on Friday. However, Florida Gov. Rick Scott formally announced on Thursday evening that he had ordered all Florida schools to be closed Friday.

An OCPS press release advised parents to prepare for the storm and noted that the OCPS website offers tips for preparing for the hurricane under the “Resources for Parents” section. More to follow throughout the weekend.
