The girls varsity basketball team won 39-38 against University on Tuesday night. The Pioneers were able to climb back after being down at halftime with second-chance points giving them an increased edge.

Freshman Marri Jackson led all players with 14 points. Junior point guard Imani Lubin scored 9 points, 8 coming in the first half. Sophomore Anijah Grant scored 8 points, along with 18 rebounds.

The Pioneers had their fair amount of struggles, with turnovers and a lack of energy paralyzing them on both sides of the ball in the first half and part of the third quarter.

“We told them we just had to turn up the intensity and keep fighting,” coach Latorrie Williams said of the players’ resilience. “It was a real test for us to see how mentally tough we were.”

Oak Ridge was down 30-29 in the fourth and was able to go on a 7-0 run before Lubin made a pivotal late game free throw to secure the win. The win has improved the Pioneers record to 3-1.

The Pioneers will face off against the 4-1 Tampa Alonso Ravens on Saturday.
